Canine’s First Ocean Experience After a Lifetime in Chains

When Herschel, the German Shepherd, caught sight of the ocean for the first time, he let out a scream that sounded eerily human. The poor pup had a rough start to life, spending his first five years chained up in a barren backyard. His desperate desire for freedom was so intense that he even tried to gnaw through his metal shackles, resulting in teeth worn down to the bone when rescuers found him.

Eventually, Herschel’s previous owner did the responsible thing and gave him up to Michelson Found Animals. The animal rescue organization provided Herschel with the necessary medical attention and care that he urgently needed.

Despite being adopted several times within six months, Herschel struggled to adapt to his new homes due to his lack of socialization during his initial years of being chained up. Michelson Found Animals realized that what Herschel needed was a loving and caring home.

As such, they enlisted the help of Rocky Kanaka, the host of Dog’s Day Out, who specializes in providing a fun day out for canines who have had difficult lives. Herschel was treated to a delightful day filled with scrumptious food, including a doggy cupcake, and playing in the snow, which he thoroughly enjoyed.

One of the viewers of One Dog’s Day Out was completely smitten with Herschel, and expressed her desire to adopt him. As she resided in Los Angeles, Rocky and Herschel embarked on a road trip to his new home. Along the way, they made a pit stop at a beach where Herschel was able to witness the vastness of the ocean for the very first time. Rocky and Herschel frolicked on the sandy shore, and Herschel let out a series of excited barks that filled the air. Rocky was delighted to see the young pup so elated! The two of them had a grand time playing in the warm water, and Rocky couldn’t help but grin from ear to ear at the sight of Herschel’s pure joy.

Rocky expressed his love for Herschel and was afraid to let him go, fearing that he might swim off to San Diego. However, Herschel is now happily living with his mother in Los Angeles, where he can spend as much time at the beach as he desires. Despite having a difficult past, Herschel remains kind and affectionate. To see more of Herschel’s playful moments in the water, watch the video below.
